Blepharoplasty

Blefaroplastica a Milano del Dott. Andrea Spano

As a cosmetic surgeon specializing in blepharoplasty, I am committed to providing natural and personalized results for each patient, improving facial aesthetics and, in some cases, even eye function. I want to guide you through the decision-making process and answer any questions or concerns regarding these procedures.

Non-surgical blepharoplasty

The first thing to do when analyzing the eyelids and the area around the eyes will be to evaluate whether it is possible to rejuvenate this area using only the laser, to reduce the invasiveness of the procedure, reduce bruising and the recovery time to a few.

Unfortunately, not all situations are suitable for the use of the laser, if excess skin is significant and if fat bags are present, proceeding with the laser would only be a waste of time and money.

On the other hand, if the excess skin is modest, we will still be in time for a non-surgical and scar-free treatment: the micro-ablative CO2 laser combined with radiofrequency.

With this technique, two or three sessions will generally be necessary but the treatment will last only a few minutes and without the need for any anesthesia. By applying moisturizers for the next few hours and cooling the skin properly, you can reduce swelling and redness in a few hours and the results will certainly be satisfactory.
With the laser we will improve the skin tone of the eyelids not only above the eyes but also in the lower and lateral part.

Very often it is useful to combine the blepharoplastic laser madonna lift with botulinum treatment.

As mentioned before, if the situation is a little more advanced, the only solution is blepharoplasty surgery, possibly associated with an eyebrow lift.

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, eliminating excess skin and fat that can give a tired and aged look. Many patients come to me because they want to eliminate the skin folds that form above the eyes and that can interfere with vision, making the gaze less lively.

The procedure is quite simple: through an incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid, I remove excess skin and fat, and in some cases, I also intervene on the muscles to obtain a more precise and lasting result. The scars are almost invisible, hidden in the crease of the eye, and the improvement is visible after a short recovery period.

Lower blepharoplasty

If your problem is mainly with the lower eyelid, you can consider lower blepharoplasty. This procedure is often used to reduce bags under the eyes, a common blemish that can give a fatigued and aged appearance. This operation aims to remove or redistribute the fat that accumulates under the skin and, if necessary, to eliminate excess skin.

The technique may vary depending on individual needs. I can use a transconjunctival approach, making an incision on the inside of the eyelid, or opt for an external incision along the edge of the lashes. Both approaches are designed to minimize scarring and ensure a natural, rejuvenated appearance.

Complete Blepharoplasty

For those who want an overall improvement in the appearance of the eyes, I recommend full blepharoplasty, a combination of the upper and lower procedure. This surgery allows you to treat both the upper and lower eyelids, ensuring complete rejuvenation of the look in a single operation.

Together, we will discuss your expectations and determine if this solution is suitable for your needs.

How does blepharoplasty surgery take place?

When I perform blepharoplasty, whether upper or lower, the choice of anesthesia depends on the complexity of the surgery and the patient’s preferences. It can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or, in more complex cases, under general anesthesia.

The incisions are carefully planned to minimize scarring. For the upper eyelid, the incision follows the natural crease of the eye, while for the lower eyelid, depending on the method chosen, the incision can be hidden inside the eyelid or placed just below the eyelashes.

The procedure generally lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the complexity, and after the surgery there will be some post-operative attention to follow to ensure a serene recovery and optimal results.

What are the recovery times from blepharoplasty surgery?

After blepharoplasty, it is normal to have swelling and bruising in the treated area. These side effects progressively disappear over the following days. Most patients can return to normal activities after a week, but I recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity and direct sun exposure for at least a month.

During the healing phase, it is essential to take care of the incisions by following my instructions, using cold compresses and applying any eye drops or ointments I may prescribe for you. This will help reduce risks and ensure optimal healing.

Blepharoplasty before and after

The results of a blepharoplasty are usually very satisfactory and long-lasting. Patients notice a significant reduction in wrinkles, bags under the eyes and a general brightness and youthfulness in the eyes. Although the improvements are long-lasting, over time the skin will continue to age naturally and slight sagging may occur.

Who can undergo the surgery?

This procedure is ideal for those who want to correct blemishes such as drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes or skin folds. However, blepharoplasty can also play a functional role: in many cases, in fact, relaxed upper eyelids can interfere with vision, and surgery can help improve this problem.

Before undergoing any surgery, a thorough consultation is essential. During our meeting, we will discuss your expectations, analyze the available options, and assess your specific condition. Every surgery involves risks, and blepharoplasty is no exception. Possible complications include infection, visible scarring, dry or irritated eyes, but we will work together to minimise these risks through careful planning and strictly following post-operative guidance.

In conclusion, blepharoplasty is an excellent option for those looking to rejuvenate their eyes and improve the functionality of their eyelids, resulting in a natural and long-lasting result. If you are interested in finding out more or evaluating whether this procedure is right for you, I invite you to book a consultation.
